It’s been five years since you made the first movie. How has this ‘Twilight’ journey been for you?
Kellan Lutz: I don’t think there’s even words to describe it, because
I’ve never been apart of something like this. Also, I never would have
imagined to be a part of something like this. So from day one its just
been special. I love my character Emmett Cullen, and then reading the
books I loved the books. You never know if your going to make all the
movies come to life, so once we started having fans come out of the
woodwork and you realise that you have fans for this, and for all the
love I had for my character I was really crossing my fingers that we
could do it. Its been an amazing, let alone all of the premiers, nothing
is work – the premiers, press, meeting the fans. Its just been amazing
and special, and you have fans that are friends now. So one of the
biggest compliments is when you have a fan who’s now a friend, who has a
child, then they name them Kellan or Emmett, that puts the biggest
smile on my face. I would have never in my wildest dreams thought
something like that would happen. Everything about it has just been
special, I’ll always remember it. And now, I’ve just seen the last movie
and it’s starting to really affect me knowing that this is it, we’re
closing all these mini chapters as far as finishing the movie with the
last press junket, soon the last premier. Then I think the very last
thing is maybe the special Platinum Box DVD grouping (laughs), it’s
special.
What was the moment for you when you thought, “Wow, this is
going to be huge.” Do you remember that moment or what that thing was,
or was it a series of things?
Kellan Lutz: There was a couple stages in the “wow” factor of all
that. For me there was reading the books, from that I could see why
people might be into it, because I read through them quick. Then also
when fans started coming to sets, and then when they found my hotel room
and knocked one night, I was like, “How…..what……?” (Laughs) That was
very special. Then thirdly it was Comic Con. I forget who it was, it was
either Robert or Kristen, but once they just stepped out, the
screaming! Then also the premiere of the first film, fans holding signs –
“Nutz for Lutz”, that made me smile. There’s been a lot of wild
moments.
With Emmett’s journey in these last two movies, was it more
fun to play him because you felt like you knew him better after each
film?
Kellan Lutz: Yeah, there’s a lot of material there and info for your
character, and then for you to add your own two cents. From day one I’ve
been having a blast creating the back-story for Emmett. In each movie I
get to add another layer and another layer. I think we all got pretty
comfortable with our characters and knowing who they were by even the
second movie, just because we loved it and we knew we were going on this
magic carpet ride. And fingers crossed, we knew we were going to do all
of the movies so we all got our characters pretty locked down. But the
last movie, Emmett is more of the protector. He has his funny lines,
which I love, I love playing the comedic relief character. But he also
plays the protector, and now that Renesmee’s in the picture, he has
something to really fight for. Plus, Bella’s a vampire now, and he had
always wanted to protect her because his brother loved her. I think he
also just loves kicking butt (laughs).
How was it working with the different directors on the
‘Twilight’ movies, and in particular working with Bill Condon on the
final two?
Kellan Lutz: That’s why I loved this ‘Twilight’ saga, we got to work
with so many different, extremely talented directors. For me it’s crash
course education working with each one of them, also, it works well
because the books are so different. So now, working with Bill Condon, he
I feel went above and beyond, because he was kind of the new transfer
kid and we were all seniors (laughs). He took the time to sit us down
individually and ask us, “What do you want to show that you haven’t
shown with your character? What would you like to see?” I remember
telling him about Rosalie and Emmett’s relationship, that you haven’t
really gotten to see any real kind of connection or love there….and we
had a kissing scene! We had a lot more of being next to each other and
interaction, comforting moments. And Bill, he’s just a fun guy to work
with, he has more energy than me – and I have a lot of energy! It was
great that he was always hands on, he was always asking questions to the
cast, he was always there asking for responses. He was very much
involved, and he knew how to communicate to all of us, which is always
very helpful. He was a gem to work with.
Did you have a favourite moment in ’The Twilight Saga:
Breaking Dawn – Part 2′? Was there something in particular that was fun
to shoot or do?
Kellan Lutz: I would have to say working with all the new vampires –
and a lot of these actors I’m really good friends with. It must be tough
for them to come in and be a part of it and feel like the “new kids”.
But there was so many new actors on ’The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn –
Part 2′ that I’ve been a fan of, so I got to add to the list of people
I’ve got to work with and its been an honour to work with. Then you
build these friendships, you make new memories with all of these people.
It just felt like band camp, I guess (laughs).

What do you think you will take away from this ‘Twilight’ experience?
Kellan Lutz: I’m gonna take the ‘Twilight’ series with the rest of my
life. It’s been a journey that’s really been so impactful on my life, I
can’t wait to share it with my grand-kids, the whole experience. And
not just acting in it, but all of the doors that have been opened and
all of the experiences I’ve been able to enjoy through it.
Was there a scene in the book that you were particularly
looking forward to shoot in ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2′?
Kellan Lutz: I’ve enjoyed a lot of different beats in the ‘Twilight’
story, but I was really looking forward to doing the arm wrestling scene
with Kristen. It’s one of the big moments for Emmett, and the fans are
really looking forward to it. It was fun to shoot. When I first read it
in that book I was excited because Emmett finally had a one-on-one scene
with Bella, and not just human Bella, but vampire Bella. We had a great
time shooting it. I wish we could’ve spent a full day doing it just
because I had so much fun doing that scene, but I loved every second.
It’s a funny scene.
Kristen Stewart becomes a very different Bella in this film. How was it for you witnessing that transformation while shooting?
Kellan Lutz: The transformation Kristen did with becoming “super”
Bella was really interesting. I mean, she’s a whole ‘nother character,
she made up a whole ‘nother character. And I spoke to Stephenie Meyer’s
about it and she was just so impressed by it. Going through the sense of
being a newborn vampire, all of the heightened senses, being able to
smell really well, see really well, fight really well – she done such an
amazing job showing that. And I couldn’t really tell, I think my
make-up is the most pale out of anyone’s, I don’t know what it is – it’s
super pale (laughs), but Kristen looked still just as beautiful.
