Cowgirls N Angels Fundraiser
A local high school group is looking to bring a new family film to the Tall City, as well as raise awareness and collect supplies for a local women's shelter.
The Trinity School Senior Girls Club is selling tickets for a pre-screening of the new independent movie, "Cowgirls 'n' Angels," and gathering donations to benefit victims at Safe Place of the Permian Basin.
"We feel for them and appreciate what they do there (at Safe Place)," said Trinity senior Lauren Wagner. "We want to start the year off right with this first project."
A portion of the ticket sales will be given to the nonprofit, and movie patrons are asked to bring canned goods and toiletry items that the women can use at the shelter.
The film will be shown 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Hollywood Tall City 14.
The film stars Midland native, Jackson Rathbone, a Trinity School alumni. His sister is a senior this year, said Kobi Lincoln, the school's director of advancement.
"Cowgirls 'n' Angels" tells the story of a young girl, played by Bailee Madison, who searches for her father, a rodeo rider, and joins the Sweethearts of the Rodeo, a team of young female rodeo rider. Madison's character learns about herself through the personal journey, and the story becomes one of redemption and discovery.
Rathbone, 27, plays a cowboy named Justin Wood, who causes a rift within the group by trying to woo one of the girls.
"It's a fun character, and I've not been able to play a cowboy yet. I get to use my roots, so to speak," he said.
The film also stars Academy Award nominee James Cromwell.
Rathbone said it's hard to get a good family film and that when he found this script, he jumped at the chance to be a part of it.
He's excited to be able to bring it to Midland where he knows there is a great sense of family and community.
"Midland's my hometown. I've never really been able to bring a family film to Midland before," Rathbone said.
He said his parents attended a screening at the Dallas Film Festival earlier this year and enjoyed it. He said one of the reasons he agreed to do the movie was because it spoke to him and his family's values.
"I thought, 'My folks are really going to love it,' and I was right," he said.
His dad, Jack, will give a short introduction before the movie that the younger Rathbone hopes Midlanders will enjoy.
"Midland has an amazing community," he said. "When the whole community steps up, they really do amazing work. And since it ties in a little bit with the fundraiser, I think it's quite beautiful."
Wagner agreed, and said the Senior Girls Club hopes to be able to give back to the women at Safe Place who may not have any place else to go.
"It's important and it's giving us in Midland an opportunity and a chance to see a movie we wouldn't see otherwise," she said.
