Sarah Gadon Talks About Keeping A Distance While Woking with Rob on 'Cosmopolis'

 

Fortunately for Sarah, there seems to be nothing hotter in Hollywood right now than starring in a Canadian movie. Just ask Robert Pattinson, who played Sarah's love interest in Cosmopolis, and Jake Gyllenhaal, who played Sarah's on-screen husband in Denis Villeneuve's An Enemy.

If Sarah's critically acclaimed role as the wife of Fassbender's Carl Jung got the industry's attention, her second Cronenberg role as Robert Pattinson's wife in Cosmopolis cemented her rising star status. Not only did the a second collaboration with Cronenberg mean she'd joined the ranks of the director's inner circle along with the likes of Mortensen, Jeremy Irons and Vincent Cassel, she became the focus of the Twihard sets' curiosity when she got close to Pattinson on-screen.

"I kept my distance, knowing that there might be a blacklash," says Sarah of working opposite Pattinson whose Twilight fan-base is comparable to Beatlemania or Bieber Fever. "Caitlin, David's daughter, received more of a blacklash because she was tweeting a lot of photographs from set, and people were speculating about their relationship and proximity. I think too that I kept such a distance that they thought, 'We're not going to find anything with this one! We'll pin it all on that one!' It's terrible that that happens too. It's terrible for him because I take my work so seriously, obviously, and so does he. It's not like you would ever compromise the integrity of your work by doing something...at least I never would. I'm boring that way"

Having Jake Gyllenhaal as her third major on-screen husband after Fassbender and Pattinson isn't so bad, I joke.

"I only accept rich, famous actors as my husband," laughs Sarah.

Although cozying up to Fassbender, Pattinson and Gyllenhaal would definitely be a perk to most people, their heartthrob statuses seem irrelevant to Sarah. In fact, she seems more excited for her co-stars to join her in the art-house realm than anything else. When I suggest that Pattinson's work with Cronenberg has helped change the path of his career from teen heartthrob to bonafide actor, Sarah agress. "Yes," she says with a smile. "Now he's going to go work with Werner Herzog."

Patricia McKenzie Talks About Working with Rob on 'Cosmopolis'

ROBsessed: Did you and Rob collaborate with David for the scene?

McKenzie: We had a rehearsal on set that morning to try some things, but finally David decided we would do the whole scene while making love, and all in one take which was quite a challenge. My first career was as a dancer, where you rehearse for 8 weeks before stepping onstage. Now, I'm always amazed at how much we as actors have to bring to the table, and be ready to improvise, and how fast the director has to think on his feet to orchestrate it all.

ROBsessed: Is Xanax prescribed for the day to calm nerves? I'm joking ;) kind of

McKenzie: It would have been tempting to have wine before the scene! One of the first film acting jobs I ever had was laced with highly erotic content, and I was young, naive, and an absolute prude. To get through the love scenes they had to ply me with red wine and the director promised me, on the life of her children, that I wouldn't be ashamed of the result. She was an angel, and in hindsight, the scene was very tame. The relationship of an actor to a director is crucial, you have to put all of your faith in their vision, so what made the intimacy in Cosmopolis really easy for me was that I trusted David completely. Rob was a sweetheart as well, very supportive and very professional. From a holistic standpoint, to mentally prepare for an intense day on set, deep breathing saves me every time, as well as a mantra not to judge myself positively or negatively, just to be. "Express, don't impress" is my aspiration.

Are you glad that now you're a big star you don't have to think about the little jobs you used to have and think "I'm glad that I don't have to do it anymore"?

The werid thing is that I never hated those little jobs before I became an actor. I loved being a waiter. I sucked, but I really enjoyed it, even though I was fired from three different places. One time I dropped a bottle of wine on some bald guy's head, and luckily it didn't break. After that incident I was banned from working tables, and sent to the back of the restaurant washing dishes with a one-armed Turkish guy. I was not allowed to go into the restaurant anymore.

You told us you love Jack Nicholson. Would you like to have the career of someone else if you could?

You can't really so everything that another actor had done. Everybody loves DiCaprio and Day-Lewis, byt nobody can keep up with them these days. I want to do my own thing, and if some people like it, then great.

The Blu-ray release of Cosmopolis is coming out in the heart of Oscar-campaign season. I get the sense it doesn't bug you too much that this film isn't being discussed more as a contender.
Yes. Every year I try to be as disconnected as possible. This year it's been very easy because we haven't been nominated for any awards. It's not sour grapes, it's not compensation; it's a relief. It's very easy to get caught up in it if you are nominated. The people who are releasing the movie get excited, they want you to do more, and you understand it because the awards can maybe get more people to see the film. This, on its face, is a good thing. However, it is all bullshit, it is all annoying and it is all very problematical. But it gives people stuff to write about, gives structure, we understand. But I won't be watching any of the awards shows. 

End of the year lists, though — Cosmopolis did end up placing second in Cahiers du Cinema's top ten of the year.
Yes and on Sight and Sound's list, as well.

So the snooty-pants Euros are digging the movie. And, it'll no doubt end up somewhere on my top 20, I think. [Note: it came in at #12.]
If I gave you money would you put it higher?   

No. Well?
Depends how much money. C'mon, let's talk. A hundred grand goes a long way.

Were you happy with how Cosmopolis was received?
No, I would've liked it to have made half a billion dollars at the box office! [laughs] The movie was received like an art film, which is to say it did OK in the big cities. Naturally you always want the biggest audience you can get, just as long as it doesn't cause you to compromise your moviemaking.

Why did you cast Robert Pattinson as limo-riding antihero Eric Packer?
Eric is in absolutely every scene, so you need an actor who is interesting and charismatic enough to look at for the entire movie. You want someone who can really come up with surprises and angles, and has a level of stardom that will support the movie. He also had to do a credible New York accent. All of that led me to Rob.

At first glance, Packer appears to be a soulless character. He initially exhibits little to no outward emotion, not while receiving updates about his dwindling finances, not during sex, not ever. That sense of detachment is enhanced by the limo, which is smooth-running, soundproof and bulletproof, with tinted windows that minimize Packer's view of outside events and prevent prying eyes from looking in at him.

"You can see his soul as the movie progresses, as he approaches his childhood," Cronenberg said, "because, really, we begin to realize that the barbershop represents his childhood. It's his childhood barbershop. It's where he used to live. It's where he came from.

"Eric wasn't born into money. I think you see Eric become more vulnerable and more childlike and naive, and when he's in the barber chair he becomes like himself as a child, before he'd erected this Eric character, this Master of the Universe guy. So you should gradually warm up to him as you realize how vulnerable and how wounded he is.

"It's why I cast Robert," Cronenberg added. "It's a very uncompromising performance. We don't go out of our way to make him more likable than he is, but you want to watch him. He's very charismatic, Rob."

"Cosmopolis" is Pattinson's show, and it's as far removed as it could be from the commercial gloss and sparkly vampires of the "Twilight" films in which Pattinson has starred as Edward Cullen. The actor has been in the news of late, owing to the demise of his relationship with "Twilight" co-star Kristen Stewart, but Cronenberg lauds his leading man for his often-overlooked, still largely untapped talents as an actor.

Cosmopolis star talks about vampires, fame and the woman who sucked his blood.

Blame it on the typecast of pale, out of this world vampire that accompanies him. I don't know what I expected from Robert Pattinson, but what I got up close was a totally grounded behavior, a warm smile (maybe little shy too), an inherent gentleness. Pattinson was at Cannes Film Festival for David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis", a movie where he gave his most demanding performance, which he admitted didn't know how to handle at first.

He asks for mineral water. He is immediately asked about his prostate. It's not a random question - prostate is connected to Pattinson's part in "Cosmopolis". "I wish I knew" the actor says (after a while) when he realizes the reason he is asked this "anatomically indiscreet" question. "I have to have it examined. People say is very important - everybody talks about it. I never exactly understood what prostate is anyway" he comments.

Cronenberg's Twilight

When David Cronenberg sent Pattinson "Cosmopolis" script, the young actor was at the last days of filming Twilight's last movie, titled "Breaking Dawn Part 2", which premiers in Greece on November. "I read David's script and I'm not ashamed to say I didn't understand a thing, but I admit it was too cool, too scary and too weird." Pattinson called Cronenberg to tell him he wasn't ready to play the part - mostly because he couldn't understand what the part was about. "No problem" Cronenberg said "I don't really know what it is about. But it does seem juicy - doesn't it?" Pattinson was encouraged. "I thought that under these circumstances we could have a good start. So we decided to go through with it." Written by David Cronenberg himself "Cosmopolis" script is based on Don De Lilo's novel which has the same title and describes one day in the life of young multimillionaire Eric Packer(Pattinson) inside his huge white limo. All things start from Eric's wish to have a haircut at his old neighborhood barber shop. On his way there he will stop many times at New York's hell, meet dozens of people and finally change the way he sees his life.

Constantly hypnotized

I asked Pattinson what was it he couldn't understand about the script "Look, I gave it to a few friends and people I know in order to read it and they all asked "What the hell is this thing?" I guess that somehow I made myself unable to understand it, because I hadn't realize that my acting would be based exactly there. Because my part Eric simply doesn't understand. He is in search of a new and better reality. So if you place yourself in a world where you understand nothing and everything seems alien, then you see it makes sense/" Later on, during filming, Cronenberg was constantly stopping shooting whenever Pattinson attempted to act and pretend to understand what was going on. "David didn't want that. He wanted me constantly hypnotized."

That was great. I was astonished to see how much of a cinephile Robert was, and how ambitious – he wants to produce and has strong views of what he wants to do in the movie world.

Well I witnessed Jude Law going through hell as well – it can be a nightmare when people have to deal with their intimacies in public. It's not respectful, so I felt for him and for her [Kristen Stewart] as well.
