Interviews and Pics from 'Tarzan' Dublin Press Junket (April 24, 2014)
The Twilight hunk plays the king of the jungle in a new motion capture animation of the film. But the 29-year-old could not re-enact the primal cry made famous in original Tarzan movies starring Johnny Weissmuller as the rights are owned by the estate of Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Kellan said: "Everyone knows the Tarzan cry, but what I didn't know was that we weren't going to be doing it the same because it's trademarked. So we had to change it a little bit.
"So for about a month and a half of shooting we didn't have the specific cry nailed down. And then on one of the last days they finally perfected the one that they wanted and they were like, 'here this is what it is, listen to it.' And then I only did it one time that I did it. And I don't remember it. It's very similar, but we couldn't do it just the same."
The Hollywood heartthrob also admitted he ended up aching after learning to walk and run on all-fours like an ape.
Kellan admitted: "I didn't realise how difficult it was gonna be. I went to the zoo and studied the movements of apes and chimpanzees, studied the vocal calls they have, their language.
"Every animal walks in a distinct different way. Humans we lead by our chin or our stomach or our chest, we pull out from the heels, push off with our toes.
And Tarzan is such a flexible, athletic... he's a bit of a ballerina in that sense because he's so graceful. So I had to change my walking movement to more like boxer stance, where you're always on your toes ready to pounce, ready for action.
"I loved it but I've never been more sore, especially running on all fours I'm not super flexible, I should have done more yoga growing up!"
Tarzan is released in cinemas on Friday May 2.
Movies.ie Fashion Model, Vampire, Lord Of The Jungle... just three titles that might cover the career of actor Kellan Lutz. The chisel jawed model became hot property when he played Emmett Cullen in the Twilight saga. This summer he rubs shoulders with Sylvester Stallone and company in THE EXPENDABLES 3 and this month he appears in a new version of TARZAN. The actor was in Dublin last month for the premiere of the new motion capture animation. Movies.ie went swinging with him afterwards.
You're no stranger to playing a beloved literary character, did you feel a different sense of responsibility with TARZAN than you did on TWILIGHT?
Kellan Lutz: Not necessarily a responsibility, because that's how I live my day to day life. I am very much a professional and I do my homework. I show up on time and I am well prepared. I do the best of my ability in portraying and honouring these characters. I want to honour them, much like any character I play. Most importantly, I was hired because of what I did, and I just wanted to make it my own.
What was the attraction of playing an iconic character like Tarzan?
KL: I love Tarzan. Growing up and as a little boy, I think every kid wished he was Tarzan; he's raised by apes and to just be that kid in the jungle. Going after this film, I did whatever I could; you take your meetings, you audition... I wore my underwear with a wig and Reinhard [Klooss], our director, loved what I did.
This version of TARZAN adds new elements to the classic story, this time around Tarzan has to protect his jungle home from a new threat in the shape of a corporation looking for a new source of energy, was this part of the draw for you?
KL: I am very much an environmental activist; I work with a lot of charities to protect the rainforest and to stop the poaching of the tigers and apes, and just really trying to save our Earth. We are blessed to have these creatures and we are responsible for them. I wondered how we were going to make [the film] unique, make it different because the story of Tarzan has been told time and time again, and there was the Disney version already that was animated. When I read the script and saw how passionate Reinhard was, and seeing where he wanted to go with the story - protecting the jungle - it felt like home. I am passionate about the character, I am passionate about what the cause is and the story that is being told, and the effect it will have on kids and adults in the audience. It's very modern and contemporary, and relative to the times that we live in.
The Dublin premiere of TARZAN is in aid of Ape Action Africa, why did you decide to support this charity?
KL: It's such an important cause that people do not understand. It's not ignorance, because they just don't know about it, so it's a lack of education. What I want to do is educate fans who will see these movies; use my platform, use my voice and go down there when I can. They are saving these apes who are being trafficked and sold for their meat. They are going to be extinct in 20 or 30 years at the rate they are going. There is bad going on everywhere and what this organisation is doing is trying to stop the poaching, stop the trading, provide these animals their environment, and educate people, let them know what's going on and how they can help. It's a small fund right now, so the more backers we get, I am proud to be part of it, I am proud of everything they are doing. That's why I am glad... It's reflective [of ‘Tarzan'] and it's great to have organisations like this who stand behind what we are doing with the movie and we can stand behind them. It's very complimentary.

Kellan to Attend 'Tarzan' Screening in Dublin + Ireland Release Date
Special preview to take place at Odeon Point Village, on Wednesday April 23rd in aid of charity Ape Action AfricaHollywood star Kellan Lutz will visit Dublin on April 23rd for a special fundraising screening of his new animated 3D film, Tarzan. The special screening will take place at OdeonPointVillage, Dublin and tickets will be available via a number of outlets, to be announced. Kellan Lutz will introduce this special screening.
The screening will be held in aid of Ape Action Africa, a charity which works for the endangered primates of Cameroon, rescuing gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys who have been orphaned as a result of illegal poaching. Guests at the special screening will be encouraged to donate to the charity at the event.
Edgar Rice Burroughs’ TARZAN, one of the most classic and revered stories of all time, returns to the big screen, completely re-imagined and in stunning 3D, for a new generation.
On an expedition in the remote African jungle, John Greystoke and his wife are killed in a helicopter crash while investigating a mysterious meteorite site. Only their young son J.J., who calls himself Tarzan, survives. A Gorilla discovers the boy in the wreckage and brings him up as one of her own. Quickly discovering the rules of the jungle Tarzan (Kellan Lutz) lives as one with the apes he now calls his family. It is not until he comes into contact with another human being, the courageous and beautiful young Jane Porter, that he starts to question his past and uncover the truth of his childhood. Tarzan and Jane come together and fight to save the jungle from Greystoke Energies new CEO William Clayton, who plans to destroy the land in his search for a new energy source. However when Clayton discovers that the true heir of Greystoke is still alive it is not just the jungle that is in danger.
Tarzan opens in Irish cinemas on May 2nd, cert: PG.

New Tarzan 3D Trailer
An all-new German-language trailer has been released for Constantin Film’s animated 3D-fest TARZAN. The American-German-French film is currently screening in Germany and Russia and is set to release elsewhere in 2014.
Unfortunately for non-German speakers, this new trailer does not feature subtitles, but it still gives audiences a good impression of the film. Hopefully an English-language version will be released in the near future for this version.

Kellan's New Interview with Crave Online
Kellan Lutz talks fighting Mickey Rourke in Java Heat, the plot of Hercules 3D and walking around in a loincloth.
Kellan Lutz is a busy man racing to get his Hercules 3D filmed before The Rock’s Hercules: The Thracian Wars. He’s also got two movies opening in theaters and VOD. We put in interview requests for both Java Heat and Syrup and Java Heat happened to come through first, but we asked Lutz about both. Java Heat is an action movie where Lutz plays an American teaming up with an Indonesian detective (Ario Bayu) to find the perpetrator of an terrorist attack. It opens New York May 10, LA May 17 and VOD May 13. Syrup is now on VOD and opens theatrically June 7.
CraveOnline: You’ve gotten to do a few action hero roles. Was this a tough sell on producers or directors at first, and has it gotten easier since you did Arena and Immortals?
Kellan Lutz: Yes and no. Doing independent movies, they have the freedom and we had the freedom and some people aren’t available, some people really just think you’re the guy. When you meet on them, I know for Arena my management company was producing that one as well, so it was kind of easy to be like, “Hey, I want to do this one.” And they’re like, “Oh yeah, okay. Let’s see what your take on it is and let’s see if we can do it.” By no means did they feed it to me, but I was like, “I really like this.” It’s just all about selling yourself.
With Java Heat, it’s all about passion I guess. I want to do all the stunts but I just loved the character of Jake and what he represented and what his journey was. The whole throwback to the buddy cop movies of the ‘80s that I love, having that passion and having the directors and producers see that you have that passion. They want to work with someone, like you said there’s a whole list of actors that can probably do it, the physique and acting chops that go with it, but I would want to work with someone who’s very passionate about it, who wants to travel, who doesn’t mind leaving their home for two months to live in Asia. So there are a lot of factors that go into it but I think passion really played a big part in it.

Kellan's New Interview with ET Online - Talks about Tarzan, Syrup, Hercules and Java Heat
May is a big month for Kellan Lutz as it not only sees two of his films (Java Heat and Syrup) debut, but he's hard at work on Tarzan, a motion-capture retelling of Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic story.
It's all part of Lutz's meticulously plotted career path, which will next see him slipping into the iconic role of Hercules.
ETonline caught up with Lutz to talk about each of those movies and trusting his gut, above all, when it comes to picking projects.
ETonline: What attracted you to Java Heat?
Kellan Lutz: The script. I really love action movies; I love being physical, I love being the hero. But there's not a lot of good ones that are well-written, so when I read Java Heat, it piqued my interest. I was excited to work with Conor Allyn [director/writer], who had such a great, clear vision. Plus we got to film in Indonesia, where I'd never been.
ETonline: How did you like Indonesia?
Lutz: I was pretty busy working, but our movie shot on 35 different locations, so it was a blessing to be able to see the countryside and the palaces while filming. It's a really beautiful place, but to see the poverty in that way blew me away. It's tough for them, but they always have smiles on their faces even though some of them have so little. But the government really opened their doors and said, "You wanna crash a car on our streets? Sure! We'll lock the streets down!"
ETonline: The action is really amazing -- how did the required physicality compare to your past roles?
Lutz: I've done some really cool action movies, I have to say, and it always puts a smile on my face to reminisce about the fight training I've done, or learning how to use a trident. But doing a movie where you're using practical explosions and put fire gel on yourself and feel that blaze all over your body while shooting guns, is just incredible. And everything I learn for every project gets put into the next one. Like for Generation Kill, I learned you are supposed to tuck your shoe laces into your boots because otherwise it's disgraceful. My brother is in the Army, so when my brother says, "I noticed your laces were tucked in, good job bro," it makes my day. The causal viewer may not notice, but I take that stuff into every role I do, and it makes me smile even if no one else notices. That education is one of the great things about every new role I take. I am applying previous work to every new character.
